Sindhu storms into Dutch Open semifinals

Nagpur: The impressive run of PV Sindhu continued in the Dutch Open Grand Prix at Almere, Netherlands on Friday.

The unseeded Indian displayed another inspiring performance in the women's singles quarterfinal against world No. 45 Jeanine Cicognini.

The sixteen-year-old demolished her Switzerland opponent 21-18, 21-9 in just 27 minutes to book her place in the last four.

The tall and lanky Hyderabadi, who is ranked 76 in the world, was trailing initially but as the match progressed, the tall teenager grew in confidence and completed a crushing victory.

A trainee of Pullela Gopichand Academy will now take on top seed Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand in the semifinals on Saturday. The world No. 11 defeated Hsiao Ma Pai of Chinese Taipei 21-19, 21-15 in another quarterfinal.

However, in the men's singles, Arvind Bhat crashed out in the quarterfinals despite winning the first game. The two-time National champion started off well but ran out of steam to lose against Chinese Taipei's Tien Chen Chou. The world No. 68 recorded superb come-from-behind 20-22, 21-13, 21-12 win.

Second seed and last year's runner-up Ajay Jayaram will lock horns with No. 5 seed Eric Pang of Netherlands in the quarterfinals, which is scheduled late in the night.

Pradnya Gadre and Prajakta Sawant will face top seeds Duanganong Aroonkesorn and Kunchala Voravichitchaikul of Thailand in the women's doubles quarterfinals.
