Ranji Trophy: Punjab poised for an outright win against Railways

ranji 26Mohali: In a dramatic turnaround, Railways who were 150 for no loss at one stage plunged to 196 for all out in 56 overs in the Ranji Trophy match against Punjab at PCA Stadium, Mohali on Saturday.

Left arm seamer Brinder Saran started the slide against Railways by trapping Sorabh Walaskar for 69 off 116 balls, studded with 11 boundaries. Soon after lunch, he struck again to take Rohan Bhosle’s (0) wicket

Later wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat was snapped by Gitansh Khera for one and Arindam Ghosh was caught by Mandeep before the batsman could open his account.

Right arm medium pacer Siddharth Kaul complimented his partner by trapping Ashiah Singh in front for 90 off 160 balls inclusive of 14 boundaries. Siddharth Kaul then accounted for Aranav Nandi (0), K.K. Upadhaya (05) and Ranjit Mali (0). Eight of the Railway batsmen failed to enter the double figure-mark.

Barinder Singh Saran returned with impressive figures of 6 for 61 and was complimented by Siddharth Kaul with 4 for 53.
Trailing by 408 runs in the first innings, Railways were forced to follow on by Punjab skipper Yuvraj Singh.

Railways in their second innings could muster 125 for 5 in 29 overs at the close of third day’s play. Unlike the first innings, this time it was the left arm spin of Varun Khanna who spelt the doom for the Railway batsmen.

Varun Khanna, who was making a comeback after a long layoff, wove a web around the Railway batsmen who succumbed to his guiles and surrendered meekly. Varun Khanna got all the five wickets that fell in the Railways in the second innings.

Prashant Avasthy 44 off 36 balls with eight boundaries, Ashish Singh 23 off 40 balls with four boundaries were the main run getters for Railways.
Arindham Ghosh (21) and Karan Sharma (8) were at the crease.
Varun Khanna 5 for 51 was the most successful bowler for Punjab in the second innings.
