Southern Samity upsets applecart

Kozhikode: Southern Samity is among the lesser-known teams competing in the E.K. Nayanar Gold Cup all-India football tournament, but it certainly looks one of the strongest.

The Kolkatan side shocked Shillong Lajong 1-0 at the Corporation Stadium on Friday night and brightened its chances of a semifinal berth considerably.

Marcos Periera scored that decisive goal for Samity in a match it desperately needed to win; a draw would have ensured Lajong a place in the semifinal from Group I behind Mumbai FC, which has already finished its engagements with seven points.

There was plenty of lively action in the match as both the sides looked keen to attack however; it was Samity which looked keener, as it required the full points from this game.
