Federer now loses to World No. 55 Brands at Swiss Open

federerpracticesGstaad: Roger Federer is having worst of times as he now lost his second-round match of Swiss Open to another low-ranked opponent Daniel Brands on Thursday. It became quite difficult for Federer to handle the serve and big forehand of Daniel Brands and consequently ended up losing by 3-2, 4-6 in just 65 minutes .

His exit from the tournament has come against the players ranked Nos. 116, 114 and 55 in the past month at Wimbledon; Hamburg, Germany and Gstaad, respectively which is a sign of worry. His current ranking of No. 5 which is also his lowest in past 10 years, since he started his run of 17 Grand Slam singles titles at Wimbledon in 2003.

Federer was trailing by 5-3 when he saved the couple of match point. The first match point was saved as he served an ace which was clubbed with a strong forehand in the next game. But the Swiss couldn’t keep up with Brands for very long and was undone by his winning serve.

This defeat has surely played spoilsport for Federer, who was seeking revival after his early exit from Wimbledon, as he lost his second-round match to World No. 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine. Former World Number 1 opted for Gstaad and Hamburg to add some match practice before the US Open.

Federer returned in Hamburg but suffered a defeat in the semifinals to left-hander Federico Delbonis of Argentina, who was ranked No. 114.

Meanwhile, third-seeded Serb Janko Tipsarevic suffered a humiliating defeat from the hands of Robin Hasse. He was knocked out 2-6, 2-6 on Thursday in his first round match of Swiss Open which lasted just 61 minutes.

He failed to deliver any tough fight against his opponent as it was quite clear from the fact that he dropped the serve four times and adding to his woe was his six double-faults. The loss will be of little help as he attempts to regain the top 10 status he held from 2011-12.
