Bangalore: A brilliant innings by Virat Kohli helped India to a respectable position after India received initial hiccups in their first innings against New Zealand in the second Test at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here.
In reply to New Zealand’s 365, India were 283 for five at stumps with Kohli playing on 93 and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on 46. Suresh Raina (55) and Virender Sehwag (43) also played an important role in India’s recovery.
Kohli was India’s mainstay for India and was involved in a crucial 99-run partnership with Raina for the fourth wicket and then put on unbeaten 104 runs with Dhoni for the sixth.
Kohli started the innings on a rather cautious and did not go for erratic shots. His innings was laced with 12 fours and a six and played 174 deliveries.
Kohli was joined by Dhoni after Raina departed with the scorecard reading 179 for five. It looked like the skipper came out with intent and attacked Jeetan Patel straightaway. He was particularly harsh on Jeetan Patel and carted him all over the park.
He hit five fours and two sixes in his70 balls innings.
Earlier Kohli stitched a good performance with Raina, who played a rather fluent innings and hit nine fours and a six in his innings. He was caught behind by Kruger van Wyk, while trying to glance a Tim Southee delivery.
Coming out in the post-lunch session at 63 for two, New Zealand started off well after Doug Bracewell dismissed Virender Sehwag (43) and Sachin Tendulkar (17) to put India at a spot of bother.
And it was then when India started the recovery act and Raina,Kohli and Dhoni got their act together.
India in the morning session required just 8.4 overs to bowl our New Zealand's first innings at 365 who started the day at 328 for six.
