US Open: Paes, Sania advance into quartersNew York: Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek got the better Michael Llodra and Nicolas Mahut 7-5 4-6 6-3, while Sania Mirza and Jie Zheng beat Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Kveta Peschke 6-2 6-3 to book a berth in the women's doubles last-eight stage, here on Sunday.

 

Paes and his Czech partner, seeded fourth, had to battle for two hours and 12 minutes to overcome 14th seeded veteran French pair.


Meanwhile, Rohan Bopanna's US Open campaign too came to an end in the pre-quarters as the sixth seed Indian and his partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin, were knocked out 4-6, 4-6 by Great Britain's Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray.


Sania and China's Zheng, seeded 10th, took out sixth seeds German-Czech pair in one hour and 12 minutes.


Meanwhile, second seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares beat Pablo Cuevas and Horacio Zeballos 6-3, 7-6(1), while fifth seeds Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer also advanced into the final eight, with a 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-3 win over Yen-Hsun Lu and Divij Sharan. The duo will battle against fourth seeds Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek in the quarter-finals.


Third seeded Spaniards Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez fell to Treat Huey and Dominic Inglot 7-6(2), 6-0. The 16th seeds saved all six break points and ended the match with an ace off Inglot's racket. Elsewhere, the 10th seeded Croatian/Brazilian team of Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo rallied from an early deficit to defeat Sergiy Stakhovsky and Mikhail Youzhny 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-4.
