Sunny Sidhu bows out of Raid De Himalaya

Raid De HimalayaShimla: Chandigarh champion rallyist, Sunny Sidhu, six time winner of the Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm had to bow out of the 14th Maruti Suzuki Raid De Himalaya on day one itself on account of mechanical failure in his vehicle.

Sunny, a top contender for the Raid crown, faced engine trouble in the third competitive stage of the event today from Chimni to Khanag. He was driving a Mahindra XUV for Team Mahindra at the event. After mechanical failure the XUV had to be towed out of the competitive zone.

Raid De HimalayaShimla: Maruti Suzuki's most endearing and challenging motorsport rally, the 14th Maruti Suzuki Raid-de-Himalaya was flagged off amidst much fervor and excitement by Sunila Dhar, Deputy General Manager (Marketing) in the presence of Manjeev Bhalla from Himalayan Motorsports Association.

The competition which is in its 14th year running is fraught with perils and undulating terrains. The Maruti Suzuki Raid-de-Himalaya is the true test of a competitor’s dexterity in handling rough roads, uncertain and extreme weather conditions and the strength and endurance of his vehicle. The competition will require the participants to traverse a distance of 1800 kms and will span across 6 days. This year the first competitive leg of the rally will start off from Shimla on 7th Oct 2012 and culminate in Leh on 12th Oct 2012.

It’s not these grand hotels that bring Rajeev Khanna to the ‘Queen of Hills’, though. Khanna is one of the scions of the Oberoi family – he is the grandson of legendary hotelier Rai Bahadur MS Oberoi. And he is in Shimla for the 14th Maruti Suzuki Raid De Himalaya, the ultimate adventure in the country in motorsport.

The Maruti Suzuki Raid De Himalaya is taking off from Shimla on October 7.  It will end at Leh on October 12. Khanna is a surprise package for most competitors at the Raid, considered by many as India’s mecca of rallying. At 57, this is the first time that he is participating in the Raid. Hold on – there is more. He has also taken on the most challenging category of this formidable motorsport event – Xtreme Motorcycles and Quads. This is part of Raid Xtreme - the category that pits competitor and machine against the most extreme terrain and the toughest conditions.
