New York: Andy Murray finally ended his grand slam draught as he beat defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia 7-6 (12/10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 in the US Open final here yesterday to annexe his maiden major championship.
Murray victory also ended Britain’s 76 year long wait for a grand slam win after Fred Perry won the US Open in 1936.
It was an intense battle between the second seed and the third seeded player and the match witnessed almost everything including a 54-shot rally, several 30-stroke exchanges, as well as a record-setting tie-breaker.
After tied even till the fourth set, Murray opened up a 3-0 lead in the decider, but then dropped his serve to allow Djokovic to come back in the match. But Murray filled with determination denied to let go off the chance and broke back to take a lead of 5-2.
He eventually won the match after Djokovic’s forehand went wide ending the four hours and 54 minutes marathon match. It was the second longest US Open final.
